奥林匹克运动会THE OLYMPIC GAMES
1.The meaning and the values of the Olympic Spirit are conveyed by symbols: among these are the rings, the motto and the flame. These symbols transmit a message in a simple and direct manner and they give the Olympic Movement and the Games an unique identity.
奥林匹克主义的意义与价值可以从一些标志反映出来:其中包括五环、口号和圣火。这些标志用最简单直接的方式传达出一个信息。它们成为了奥林匹克运动和奥运会的标识。



2.Outside the entrance to the Olympic Museum in Lausanne (Switzerland), the three symbols are brought together to welcome visitors from the around the world:

–The Olympic flag, decorated with five rings, flutters at the top of a flagpole.

3.The five rings represent the five continents. They are interlaced to show the universality of the Olympic Spirit and the meeting of the globe’s athletes of the whole world during the Olympic Games.
五环代表五大洲。它们互相交错表示奥林匹克主义的普适性,也表示奥运会期间全世界的运动员欢聚一堂。

4.Nowadays, use of the Olympic symbol is subject to very strict rules. Graphic standards have been set down, which determine, for example, the exact position of each ring:

5.On the Olympic flag, the rings appear on a white background. The flag reinforces the idea of the Olympic Movement’s universality, as it brings together all the countries of the world.

6.The six colors of the flag (including the white of the background) represent all nations. It is wrong, therefore, to believe that each of the colors corresponds to a certain continent!

7.At the Olympic Games, the flag is brought into the stadium during the opening ceremony. It must fly in the stadium for the entre duration of the Games.

8.When the flag is lowered at the closing ceremony, it signals the end of the Games.

9.The mayor of the host city of the Games passes the Olympic flag to the mayor of the next city hosting of the Games.

10.Today the Olympic rings are one of the most easily identifiable signs in the world, and everyone immediately associates them with the Olympic Games. However, this was not always the case.

11. The rings appeared for the first time on the winners’ medals at the 1924 Games in Paris (France). They reappeared on the prize medals for the Equestrian Games in 1956 in Stockholm (Sweden).

For the Winter Olympics, the rings have appeared on the medals at each edition of the Games since 1928 in St Moritz (Switzerland).

13.You can find the rings on many items and souvenirs made for the Games dating back to the 1924 Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix (France).

14.The world of philately soon got to know the rings. They have appeared on stamps since the 1928 Games in Amsterdam (The Netherlands).

17.The Olympic motto is made up of three Latin words:
Which means: FASTER — HIGHER — STRONGER

18. The sense of the motto is that being first is not necessarily a priority, but that giving one’s best and striving for personal excellence is a worthwhile goal. It can apply to athletes and to each one of us.

19. The three Latin words became the Olympic motto in 1894, the date of the IOC’s creation. Pierre de Coubertin proposed the motto, having borrowed it from his friend Henri Didon, a Dominican priest who taught sport to students.

20.The Olympic flame is one of the best-known features of the Games. From the moment the flame is lit to the moment it goes out, a very precise ritual is laid down: The lighting–The relay route–and–Arrival at the stadium

21.In memory of the origins of the Olympic Games, the flame is lit in Olympia Greece, some months before the opening of the Games. The Olympic flame can only be lit by the sun’s rays.

22.Carried by relay from Olympia to the host city of the Games, the flame crosses different regions, countries and continents. The passage of the flame announces the upcoming Olympic Games to the inhabitants along the route and allows those following its journey to discover it’s culture and customs.
圣火以接力的方式从奥林匹亚传送到奥运会主办城市。一路上经过不同的地区、国家和大陆。圣火的传递过程中,向沿途的居民宣布即将开始的奥林匹克运动会,同时也让一路上的跟随者们了解当地的文化与习俗。

23.On the day of the opening of the Games, the flame enters the stadium. With the lighting of the cauldron by the last relay runner the flame is transferred from the torch to the place where it will continue to burn for the entire length of the Games. The flame is extinguished on the final day of the Games at the closing ceremony.
在奥运会开始的当天,圣火进入体育场。由最后一名火炬手用火炬点燃火炬塔,圣火在整个比赛中将一直燃烧。在最后一天的闭幕式上圣火会被熄灭。

24. Olympic Image
The core essence of the Olympic Games as it is found in the thoughts and emotions of people around the world. The core brand or message of the Olympic Games, stems from elements that are either visual or verbal or both (e.g., a word, a mark, a symbol, a design, a term, or a combination of these) that communicate the identity and the image of the Olympic Games and the Olympic athletes, and that convey a set of expectations of and associations with the Olympic Games and the Olympians athletes.
奥运会形象
奥运会形象是奥运会的精髓,也是全世界人民共同的思想和情感。奥运会形象源自视觉的,或文字的,抑或图文并茂的要素(如一个字、一个标志、一种 符号、一种设计、一条术语或是所有这些的结合体),播散着奥运会和奥运健将们的风采与形象,承载着他们的殷切期望和遐想,是奥运会的核心品牌或信息。

25. Olympic Marks
Any official trademark, design, logo, symbol, art product, term, phrase, or other distinguishing feature that serves to represent an Olympic organization or the Olympic Movement. Such features include the Olympic symbol, the Olympic flag, the Olympic motto, an Olympic emblem, and the Olympic anthem.
奥林匹克标识
奥林匹克标识是指代表奥林匹克组织或奥林匹克运动的任一正式商标、设计、会徽、标志、艺术品、术语、短语或其他特征。这些特征包括奥林匹克五环标志、奥林匹克会旗、奥林匹克格言、奥林匹克徽记及奥林匹克会歌。

26.Olympic Movement
The movement ‘s goal, led by the IOC, encompassing those organizations, athletes and other persons who agree to adhere to the Olympic Charter, the goal of which is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport. This is practiced without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit and requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.

27.Olympic Partner Programme, The (TOP)
The Olympic Partner Programme (TOP) is an international Olympic marketing programme created by the IOC, which includes the Organizing Committees of the Games, the National Olympic Committees and the TOP Partners.

28.Olympic Philately, Numismatic and Memorabilia Commission
The Olympic Philately, Numismatic and Memorabilia Commission (OPNMC) is comprised of the International Federation of Olympic Philately (FIPO), the International Federation of Olympic Numismatic (FINO), and the International Olympic Memorabilia Federation (FIMO). The OPNMC in conjunction with the FIPO, FINO, and FIMO share the same goal: to increase awareness of all Olympic collections by linking them to the cultural activities of the Olympic Movement.

29.Olympic Photographic Archive Bureau (OPAB)
Olympic Photographic Archive Bureau, managed by Allsport, is the organization designated by the IOC to maintain and manage the Olympic Photographic Archive. Allsport is the official photography agent to the IOC (a division of Getty Images) and the organization designated by the IOC to maintain and manage the Olympic Photographic Archive Bureau (OPAB).
奥林匹克图片档案署

30. Olympic Programme Commission
The Olympic Programme Commission is responsible for reviewing and analyzing the programme of sports, disciplines and events, and also the number of athletes, in each sport for the Games of the Olympiad and the Winter Olympics. It is also responsible for developing recommendations on the principles and structure of the Olympic Programme for the Olympic Games and the Winter Olympics. The Commission makes recommendations in this regard to the IOC Executive Board, which shall present a report to the 114th IOC Session in November 2002 in Mexico City for the programmes of the Turin 2006 Olympic Winter Games and the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

31. Olympic Scholarships for Athletes Programme
The Olympic Scholarships for Athletes Programme is an Olympic Solidarity programme offering funding to promising athletes, nominated by their respective NOCs, to allow them to train, compete and improve in their goal of qualification for the Olympic Games.
奥林匹克运动员奖学金计划
奥林匹克运动员奖学金计划是一项奥林匹克团结基金计划。 该计划对有潜力的运动员提供资金支持,使他们能为争取奥运会的参赛资格而不断训练、比赛和进步。各国家(地区)奥委会提名推荐本国的运动员人选。
